"We have arrived at the crime scene!¡± shouted an officer through his radio. ¡°I repeat, we have arrived at the crime scene!¡±
The blue and red lights from the police cars and the yellow tint from the windows of the houses disturbed the quiet, dark neighborhood. The standard yellow police tape already surr- ounded the entrance of the small residential house. Few of the neighbors had gathered to one side of the house, and were clamoring with excitement as the last cop to arrive pushed his way through.
¡°Why would someone do this?¡± asked one of the cops, standing close to the dead body.
¡°Who knows? The only thing we know right now is that the blow came from behind. Definitely premeditated murder.¡± The detective lifted the blanket covering the body to give the cop a better look. The cop only got a partial view before he was disgusted and motioned to cover it.
¡°Have you ever seen something like this before?¡±
¡°No. I¡¯m new.¡±
¡°No wonder,¡± the detective said, shaking his head. As he walked away from the corpse, he turned and added, ¡°You¡¯ll get used to it.¡±
preface
Everyone says that completing your first novel is bittersweet. I now understand what they mean. At first, the adrenaline rushed through me at the fact that I had finished something so daunting. Yet, I¡¯m left so unsatisfied. The more I reread what I¡¯ve written, the more I feel like the story is somehow incomplete, as if I am staring down a hollow tree. For now, however, I am content with what I¡¯ve created. While this immense project was time-consuming and sometimes stressful, the process of writing a novel was very engaging and pleas- urable. The main reason that I began such a huge endeavor is simply this: I have the urge to tell stories. Like the people who gathered around to tell each other stories by firelight thousands of years ago, I too am fascinated by the possibilities of storytelling. I like books, I like movies, in fact, I like anything that has a developing narrative. The Power-Broker is my first book, not my last, and I have many other stories in mind, with one already in progress. I started the story with a premise that obsessed me, and one that I feel somehow fits in with the current world we live in The plot develops from a single event that spins out into an ever more puzzling murder. The power-broker, a very prestigious ¡°job¡± within society, identifies someone hungry for power. This person lunges at every opportunity. This novel portrays one such person, who lunges at a particular opportunity.

The Power-Broker: the title can imply so much. The def- inition of a broker is simply one who connects the consumer to the producer, and in doing so, makes some profit. Power is simultaneously a dangerous weapon and a honey-sweet opportunity. Humans, after all, are naturally power-hungry. Combine the two terms and you have the power-broker. A very prestigious ¡°job¡± within society, a power broker lunges at every opportunity. The Power-Broker takes place in a very familiar, yet a non-existent location called Lamada City. The plot begins with a single murder that spirals into an ever more puzzling conspiracy. This novel portrays one such power broker, who lunges at a particular opportunity with devastating consequences. He sets into motion a series of events which ensnares a detective, his partners, and the entire Lamada City Police Department in his ambition.
The Power-Broker, although it can be considered sci-fi, is reasonably realistic. There are some assumptions made and exaggerations included, but the science remains quite faithful to actuality in most parts. Although some experts may doubt the accuracy of the science, one should keep in mind that this is fiction. I wrote it out of joy and with passion, and that is, I think, what counts the most. So without any further ado, just flip forward a few pages and start the novel. Enjoy.
